John Harper - August 05, 2010
John Lee Harper, 78, of Jacksonville, entered into eternal rest on
Thursday, August 5, 2010 at the Britthaven of Jacksonville Nursing
Facility.
A native of Wilmington, North Carolina, John spent his early childhood
years in New York. Deacon Harper became a faithful member of Tried Stone
Holiness Church in Washington, DC. When his health began to decline, he
moved to Jacksonville to be near other family members and friends. At that
time, he became a member of Macedonia F.B.H. Church of Wilmington. He was
a Veteran of the United States Army. John loved to travel and would often
vacation in Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Brazil. He majored in
Foreign Languages, specializing in Spanish, which he spoke fluently. John
was employed as a Foreign Language Teacher in the New York, Maryland and
DC areas. As a student, he graduated from different colleges in New York
and from North Carolina Central University in Durham. He retired from the
Washington, DC- Prince George County School District.
He was preceded in death by: his PARENTS, John and Minnie Harper; and his
only sibling, his SISTER, Lucille Norman.
John will be forever cherished by: a faithful, compassionate COUSIN and
caretaker, Mildred White of Jacksonville; 2 DAUGHTERS, Gaynelle Montoya of
Utah and Yolanda Smallwood of Waterbury, Connecticut; 8 GRANDCHILDREN; 12
GREAT-GRANDCHILDREN; and a host of COUSINS, other relatives and beloved
friends.
The family will be receiving friends at the residence of his cousin,
Mildred White, 101 Village Circle, Jacksonville.
Viewing will be held on Friday, August, 13, 2010 at the church, one hour
prior to the service.
Homegoing Service will also be held on Friday, August 13, 2010 at 11:00AM
in the Washington Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Johnny
White, Sr., Officiating and the Rev. Freeman White, Sr., Pastor, Eulogist.
Interment with military honors will follow the service in the Coastal
Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.
John's earthly remains are resting peacefully in the care, comfort and
serenity of: Morgan Funeral Home, Inc., 150 Williamsburg Parkway,
